What is the strap winder and what does it do?

There are two types: recessed (inside a wall box) and surface-mounted (screwed to the frame). Without it, the strap dangles loose and the blind becomes awkward to operate.

The strap stays slack and no longer rewinds when released, the blind feels heavier because the spring is not helping, the strap rubs or slips out of its slot, the cover is cracked or yellowed and brittle, or the winder spins without gripping. If the strap edges are also frayed, strap and winder are usually replaced together: they wear out as a pair.
Why do winders break?
Cycles: every raise and lower tensions and releases the spring, and after years of daily use it loses strength or snaps. Sun and friction harden the plastic cover until it cracks, and a frayed strap works like sandpaper that speeds up the wear.
