Quick summary
A blind that drops by itself is usually, on strap blinds, a winder spring that has lost its force or a worn brake that no longer holds; on motorised blinds, a misaligned limit switch or a worn motor brake. It’s worth checking: the weight of the slats should not overcome the mechanism.

Why a blind drops by itself
On strap blinds, the winder has a spring and a brake that should hold the slats’ weight when you release the strap; if the spring has lost force or the brake is worn, the blind slides. On motorised blinds, the motor has a brake and a limit switch: if the brake wears or the limit switch drifts, it does not hold the position and gives way little by little.
What you can check
Notice whether it drops slowly or suddenly, whether it’s strap or motorised, whether the winder pulls the strap back tight or loose, and whether it only stays up while you hold it. Also check whether some slats drop more than others: it helps tell if the issue is the spring, the brake or the axle.
What you should not do
Do not leave the blind half-open trusting it will hold: it can drop suddenly onto the sill or your hands. Do not force the winder to tension the spring by hand or tamper with a live motor. A blind that won’t hold needs the specific part adjusted or replaced.
When to call
Call if the blind won’t stay up, if it drops sharply when you release the strap, if it only holds while you grip it, or if it’s motorised and won’t keep its position. A blind that falls on its own is also a finger-trapping risk.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my blind drop by itself after I raise it?
Because the mechanism no longer holds the slats’ weight: on strap blinds it’s usually the winder spring or a worn brake; on motorised blinds, the limit switch or the motor brake.
Is it dangerous?
It can be. A blind that falls on its own can trap fingers or drop suddenly, and leaves the home not properly closed.
Can it be fixed or does it all need replacing?
In many cases it’s enough to replace or adjust the holding part (spring, brake or limit switch) without changing the whole blind. We confirm at the inspection.
How much does it cost?
It depends on whether it’s an adjustment or a part replacement, and whether it’s strap or motorised. We give a free no-obligation quote before starting.
