Quick summary

If the motor does not respond: check the power supply and remote batteries, wait 15-20 minutes in case the thermal protection has tripped, and look for a manual override (a crank handle or hook rod next to the box). If there is no override, do not lift the blind by hand: forcing it breaks adaptors, the axle or the motor itself. Send a photo over WhatsApp and ask for help.

First rule out the simple things: power, remote, thermal cut-out

Many “broken motors” are an unplugged socket, a tripped breaker, flat remote batteries or the motor’s thermal protection: if you have run the blind up and down several times in a row, the motor shuts itself off on temperature and works again after 15-20 minutes of rest. Check these three things before anything else.

How to raise a blind with a broken motor (emergency fix)

Does your motor have a manual override? How to use it

Motors with an override have a crank handle or a hooked rod next to the blind box. Fit the crank and turn slowly: the blind will rise even with a dead motor. It is the system designed exactly for this emergency, common on shop shutters and large blinds. If the crank spins freely or suddenly stiffens, stop: something is jammed.

What you must never force

Do not pull the blind up by hand if the motor has no override: the axle is coupled to the motor, and forcing it snaps the crown and drive adaptors. Do not hold the button down “to see if it starts”: with a mechanical jam, every attempt punishes the motor further. And do not open the box with the blind halfway without securing the curtain: it can drop at once.

The classic fault: the motor hums but nothing moves

If the motor buzzes but the blind does not move, it is usually spinning free because the plastic adaptors that couple it to the axle have snapped, or the capacitor is worn out and the motor has no torque. Both are quick repairs for a technician and far cheaper than a new motor, but they require opening the box with the blind secured.

When to call

Call if the blind is stuck down in a shop or a room you need, the motor hums but nothing moves, you smell burning or the blind has jammed crooked halfway. We repair or replace the motor with a fixed quote before starting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I raise a motorised blind by hand?

Only if the motor has a manual override (crank or rod). Without it, the axle is locked by the motor itself and forcing it breaks parts. In that case, book an urgent visit instead.

The motor hums but the blind does not move — what is it?

Almost always snapped drive adaptors or a worn-out capacitor. Both are quick repairs if the blind has not been forced beforehand.

Can the motor be repaired or must it be replaced?

It depends on the fault. Capacitor, adaptors or limit switches can be repaired. If the motor is burnt out or very old, replacing it with a current model — even with remote control or smart-home integration — makes more sense. We give you both options with a quote before you decide.

Is a motorised blind stuck down an emergency?

If it keeps a shop from opening or a room unusable, yes: we attend same-day emergencies across Barcelona and the metro area. Send a photo of the box and the remote over WhatsApp and we confirm the visit.
